About me
Hi there!
I’m Betty, the founder of Flower and Fern. My passion for Michigan’s natural landscapes and native plants inspired me to start this business. With a background in biology and conservation, I’ve spent countless hours outdoors, enjoying everything nature has to offer. Growing up, I spent my summers catching frogs and winters building snow forts—my love for the outdoors has only grown since then. These days, I spend my time with family and friends either sharing a meal together or camping along the shores of Lake Michigan with my husband, soaking in as much of nature as possible.
Why Native Plants?
Native plants are plants that come from Michigan, meaning that they’re adapted to our local environment! So, not only are these plants often hardy and do well in a variety of conditions, they also support wildlife. According to the National Wildlife Federation, a single oak tree can support up to 436 different kinds of butterflies. Beyond the benefits for wildlife, other benefits of native plants include:
Less water use than traditional gardens
Less maintenance than traditional gardens
Improved soil health
Native gardens are also incredibly beautiful, unique, and can be designed to fit any space!
